Leaders of their respective political camps, Lula and Jair Bolsonaro seem to have realized that they do not need to please the Centrão parties to have an electoral advantage in 2026.
In recent weeks, in almost synchronized fashion, the duo have given a “banana” to some of the bloc’s top political leaders and made decisions that go against the group’s wishes.

Bolsonaro, detained at the Brasilia Federal Police Superintendency since November 22, threw a bucket of cold water on Centrão by nominating his son Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) as presidential candidate.
The decision displeased the presidents of the PP, Ciro Nogueira; from the PSD, Gilberto Kassab; on the Republican side, Marcos Pereira; and from the PSDB, Aécio Neves, who wanted Governor Tarcísio de Freitas as candidate.
Despite Centrão leaders’ hope that Bolsonaro will revisit the idea, Bolsonaro’s supporters say the decision to toss Flávio is irreversible, as the former president prefers to see his family name in the conflict.
Lula’s war against Centrão
Lula started the war with Senate President Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP) by appointing AGU leader Jorge Messias to a vacant position in the Supreme Federal Court (STF).

Lira’s irritation with the government after the House saved Glauber
The same thing happened with the President of the Chamber, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), the target of strong criticism from the government after having, by surprise, guided the dismissal of the deputy Glauber Braga (PSol-RJ) and the PL Dosimetry.
Among PT members, the assessment is that there are few issues of interest to the government that need to be voted on in plenary before the elections — and that there is no point in Lula making gestures towards the Centrão, because they will not support the PT member’s re-election.
The Allies recall that in 2022, Lula did not have the support of any Centrão party on a national basis and that he nevertheless managed to defeat Bolsonaro. Eventually, he was approached to compose by almost every center legend.
According to Lula’s allies, the trend is towards an escalation of the conflict. The PT member promises to insist on programs that do not have the support of the Centrão, such as the PEC which puts an end to the 6×1 scale and zero fare in public transport.
If these agendas do not move forward, Lula will not hesitate to criticize his opponents.
