President Lula (PT) approved a law that authorizes legislative police officers who work in state assemblies as well as the Legislative Chamber of the Federal District (CLDF) to carry weapons. The order was published in the Official Union Gazette (DOU) on Tuesday (23/12).
The sanction of the President of the Republic modifies the Disarmament Statute. Currently, this rule already allows legislative police officers in the House and Senate to carry weapons. With the changes, this rule will be extended to all legislative police officers in the country.
In October of this year, the Constitution, Justice and Citizenship Commission (CCJ) of the Chamber of Deputies approved bill 5948/23, by Senator Izalci Lucas (PL-DF), which authorizes the carrying of firearms for legislative police officers in state legislative assemblies and in the Legislative Chamber of the Federal District.
At the time of the vote in the Senate, Izalci argued that the bill focused on the police of the legislative assemblies was necessary because the Legislative Police of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies have the right to carry weapons.
The rapporteur of the proposal in the House, Deputy Marcos Pollon (PL-MS), recommended its approval. “The proposal establishes that possession will be limited to the exercise of functional functions, conditioned on compliance with the requirements set out in the legislation,” he stressed.
In addition to legislative police officers, Article 6 of the Disarmament Statute (Law No. 10,826/2003) authorizes the use of weapons by the armed forces, police officers (federal, civilian, military, road, rail), prison officers, municipal guards (in capitals and large cities, with restrictions), intelligence agents and private security companies.
