Kast takes control of Chile
José Antonio Kast was elected president of Chile after defeating left-wing candidate Jeannette Jara in the second round. The conflict was considered one of the most polarized since the end of the military dictatorship in the country and confirmed the trend indicated by electoral polls, highlighting a shift to the right in Chilean political conduct.
After the announcement of the results, Jeannette Jara admitted her defeat and spoke out on social networks. “Democracy has spoken loud and clear. I have just spoken to President-elect José Antonio Kast to wish him success for the good of Chile,” he wrote.
Since 2010, Chile has seen an alternation between right-wing and left-wing governments in each presidential election, a scenario that continues with the outcome of Sunday’s election.
