President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said this Friday (12) that digital networks must be held responsible for the systematic publication of hate speech and the encouragement of violence against women. According to him, it is unacceptable that platforms continue to claim that they have no responsibility for criminal content published on their networks.
“Protecting the life, physical integrity and dignity of girls and women is not censorship, it is the responsibility of all Brazilian society and we must assume this role. A responsibility from which social networks cannot continue to exempt themselves,” he declared during the XIII Human Rights Conference.
The President reiterated that freedom of expression cannot be confused with complicity in the commission of heinous crimes. He also declared that it was “intolerable that publications encouraging femicide, rape, assault and other forms of violence against women continue to circulate with impunity, without any form of moderation”.
Lula said that next week he would meet with the main authorities of Brazilian institutions – including representatives of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), the Superior Court of Justice (STJ), the Senate, the Chamber, the Public Defender’s Office and the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) – to promote a “reversal” of the discourse on violence against women.
“Violence against women is not a problem that must be solved by women, it is a problem that must be solved by the character of men who think the world belongs to them,” he said.
