MADRID, December 20 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The President of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, defended the opening of the Mercosur summit this Saturday with a speech with a marked political and international tone, in which he highlighted the supreme importance of “the construction of a prosperous and peaceful South America as the only doctrine that suits us” and warned that a possible American invasion of Venezuela, as envisaged by American President Donald Trump, “would represent a humanitarian catastrophe for the entire hemisphere”.
“Some claim that advancing integration means renouncing sovereignty. But the real threats to our sovereignty are of another nature. They present themselves today in the form of war, anti-democratic forces and organized crime,” Lula told leaders present at the meeting being held in the Brazilian city of Foz de Iguazú, in a hotel located a few meters from the legendary falls.
With a nod to Argentine President Javier Milei, who was present at the event, Lula cited the Falklands War with the United Kingdom as a precedent for the current situation.
“The South American continent has once again been harassed by the military presence of an extra-regional power,” Lula said in reference to the American deployment against Venezuela.
“The limits of international law are being tested. Armed intervention in Venezuela would be a humanitarian catastrophe for the hemisphere and a dangerous precedent for the world,” he warned.
“Building a prosperous and peaceful South America is the only doctrine that suits us,” Lula concluded before allaying doubts. “Some argue that advancing integration means giving up sovereignty, but the real threats to our sovereignty are of a different nature: war, anti-democratic forces and organized crime,” said the Brazilian president.
