President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) opened the last ministerial meeting of the year, this Wednesday (17/12), by releasing ministers for the 2026 elections. He said that those who must step down should step down and asked them to “win the position for which they are going to compete.”
“When you have a minister, he cries: ‘Why me?’ When he wants to leave, he finds all the necessary arguments to leave and places the responsibility on the people. “The people want me to leave, the base is putting pressure on me, my state demands it.” I will be very happy if those who have to move away do so. And please win the position you are going to run for, don’t lose it,” Lula said.
The meeting was convened to discuss the rest of the government’s main measures, such as sanctioning income tax (IR) exemption for those earning up to R$5,000 and other actions of social interest. The president must also address the ministerial transition with some ministers leaving to run in next year’s elections.
