President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) informed on social networks that he signed this Monday 15 the reappointment of Paulo Gonet as head of the Attorney General’s Office (PGR). At X, Lula said he was convinced that Gonet would continue to manage the PGR with “firmness and responsibility”.
It was during his first term at the PGR that Gonet denounced former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) for five crimes linked to the attempted coup d’état after the 2022 elections. “Brazil needs seriousness, courage and commitment to the truth. It needs a good investigation, responsible information and independence to act without fear of anyone,” the president said.
The new mandate of the PGR begins Friday 19 and runs until December 2027. The signing ceremony by Lula took place privately at the Palácio do Planalto. The president and Gonet had an agenda scheduled for 2:40 p.m. this Monday.
Paulo Gonet’s new mandate was approved by the Senate on December 12. His name was approved by 45 votes for and 26 against, in a close vote, as 41 votes were needed for a new nomination. This is the smallest margin of approval for an attorney general since Brazil’s redemocratization.
