Monday afternoon, 65 deputies were present in the plenary session of the Legislative Assembly of Rio (Alerj) to vote for the arrest of Rodrigo Bacellar (União Brasil), president of the House. During the ceremony, attention was drawn to the fact that some parties were divided between voting for or against the revocation of the prison, despite the parties’ instructions. This was the case of President Lula’s Workers’ Party (PT); of the Liberal Party (PL), of Governor Cláudio Castro; and the Social Democratic Party (PSD), of Mayor Eduardo Paes.

Last week, the House left came together to advise MPs to vote in favor of maintaining the prison. Representatives of the PT, PSB, PCdoB and PSOL were present at the meeting. In a post on Instagram, the PT-RJ even published a public note ordering the judiciary to vote for maintaining the precautionary measures against Bacellar.
Despite this, a party deputy voted differently from the rest of her colleagues: Carla Machado (PT) was the only party member to vote in favor of revoking the prison. The party’s six other MPs voted together to uphold the arrest of the Speaker of the House.
The PL, party of Governor Cláudio Castro, was not unanimous either. Three deputies voted to keep Bacellar in prison, contrary to the majority of judges. The party has 18 deputies, and only Célia Jordão, Douglas Gomes and Márcio Gualberto voted for maintaining the prison. Delegate Carlos Augusto was the only one from the party to abstain.

Within the PSD, the party of Mayor Eduardo Paes, there were also differences regarding the direction of the party. Last week, the party’s six parliamentarians participated in a meeting during which they were invited to vote in favor of maintaining Bacellar prison.
However, in plenary, deputies Lucinha and Munir Neto decided to go against the directives and voted in favor of revoking the arrest. The PSD still has one absence: MP Claudio Caiado did not attend the vote.

The majority voted for the revocation
The Legislative Assembly of Rio (Alerj) voted this Monday afternoon for the arrest of Rodrigo Bacellar (União Brasil), President of the House. By 42 votes, the House decided to overturn the president’s arrest. There were 65 deputies in plenary and 21 voted against the revocation of the prison. Bacellar was arrested last Wednesday by the federal police.
He is suspected of leaking data on an operation carried out by agents against state deputy Tiego Raimundo dos Santos Silva, known as TH Jóias. According to a PF report, the Alerj president had warned his parliamentary colleague of the arrest, with instructions to get rid of evidence, such as deleting his cell phone data.
