The municipal council of Mairena del Aljarafegoverned by Antonio Conde, has raised more than 2.16 million euros in European funds, for the creation in 2027 of a new large park of more than 40,000 square meters in the southwest sector of … the commune, which now has more than 48,000 inhabitants according to the latest statistics; in a sector of the municipal area that already borders that of Palomares del Río.
In detail, the project requires a total investment of more than 2.5 million euros, for which the Mairena Town Hall, the most populous municipality in the Aljarafe region, obtained just over 2.16 million euros from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), for this future new green space, which is added to the large parks available to the municipality, mainly those of Porzuna, Central, Cavaleri and de la Huerta.
The new proposed action, with the year 2027 as the horizon for its creation, involves the reclassification of rural land of approximately four hectares at the foot of the secondary road SE-3303, which connects the old town of Mairena to the roundabout leading to Palomares del Río once beyond the urbanization of La Mampela; so that these currently disused lands accommodate a new peri-urban park.
Bamboo in Aljarafe
The design of the new park highlights the introduction of enon-invasive bamboo specimens, capable of reaching up to 18 meters in height in just three yearsin combination with trees and shrubs of native species.
According to the municipal council, the project thus has a “pioneer taking advantage of the rapid growth of non-invasive bamboo“, with native species, to generate a favorable microclimate in a short time, creating an island of biodiversity that citizens will be able to enjoy in just over three years”, in the middle of the public and political debate on strategies for integrating shade in municipalities as one of the keys to improving urban comfort in the face of the ravages of climate change, particularly incessant in the province of Seville.
Through the selection of species to be planted on this four hectare plot of land, the idea is that the new forest will be able to absorb between two and three times more carbon dioxide than conventional species and produce 35 percent more oxygenwhich will considerably reduce the carbon footprint and improve air quality, in the middle of the first metropolitan ring.
This new green space is Mairena del Aljarafe’s new bet after the opening of Central Park in 2021
This new public park project represents in any case the main new stage in terms of green spaces facing the municipality, characterized by its urban and demographic expansion, since in 2021 it integrated the Central Parkwhich has become one of the main places for leisure, sports and outdoor recreation for the citizens of Mairena.
Moreover, last summer precisely, the Town Hall of Mairena approved the file corresponding to the reformed project for the execution of the second phase of Central Parkfor the expansion of said green space with approximately 15 additional hectares.
“These 2.2 million euros, are added to the 6.6 million allocated to the renewal of public lighting and the 9 of the EDIL Plan (Integrated Local Development Strategies) that we also received from Europe are a historic reward for the city project that we are carrying out together and the definitive impetus towards the Mairena of the future, better connected, more comfortable, with more green spaces and better public services”, highlighted the mayor, Antonio Conde, after confirming the obtaining of the aforementioned community funds for the new public park.
