Pastor Silas Malafaia criticized the right after the US government announced the withdrawal of Magnitsky Act sanctions against Minister of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), Alexandre de Moraes. In a video published on social networks this Saturday (13/12), the evangelical leader declared that part of the conservative camp had reacted in a hasty and emotional manner to the North American withdrawal.

According to Malafaia, there is an erroneous reading according to which the suspension of sanctions would be a direct consequence of the decisions taken in Brazil, such as the reduction of sanctions provided for in the PL Dosimetry, approved by the Chamber last Wednesday (10/12). The text must be voted on in the Senate on December 17.
“Now comes the question of Magnitsky’s suspension of Alexandre de Moraes. Then it starts: ‘The American document is because Brazil reduced the sentence’. And the people on the right come and say: ‘See? They reduced the sentence and look what happened’. Guys, the Americans look at their navel first. Let’s stop with the chatter and the idea that our hope comes from the outside,” he said.
In the opinion of the religious leader, if the American withdrawal is linked to PL Dosimetry, the result must be seen positively.
“I prefer the freedom of the innocent to Magnitsky’s revenge against Alexander de Moraes. If that’s the reason, it’s wonderful. Because, in this political moment, all we could get was a reduction in sentences,” he said.
The pastor also defended that the right is waiting for a more favorable moment to articulate a broad, general and unrestricted amnesty.
“Let’s be calm. Politics is not based on emotion or on social networks. I don’t care about criticism. The right has a lot to learn. It’s a shame: they launch a candidacy in turn, without consulting anyone, and they want everyone to swallow it anyway,” he declared.
Moraes, outside the sanctions of the Magnitsky law, disturbs Bolsonaro supporters
Pastor Silas Malafaia’s statements come against a backdrop of frustration among allies of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL). The lifting of sanctions was announced on Friday (12/12) by the American government and surprised part of the Bolsonarista base, who believed in maintaining sanctions against Moraes.
Federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP), who has resided in the United States since February and was one of the main organizers of the sanctions, said he received the news with “regret”.
In a statement, Eduardo said the lack of cohesion among Brazil’s allies contributed to the U.S. decision. This assessment was criticized by other names on the right. MP Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG), for example, called the statement an “intellectual fraud,” saying geopolitical decisions cannot be attributed to the Brazilian people or Congress.
Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) adopted a more optimistic tone and said that President Donald Trump’s gesture would favor the advancement of an amnesty project in the country.
The United States government said the decision to lift Magnitsky Act sanctions against Moraes was driven by the approval of Dosimetry PL. In a note sent to MetropolisesThe State Department said the measure “signals an improvement in litigation conditions in Brazil.”
“The United States views the approval of a major amnesty bill by the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies as a step in the right direction, which signals an improvement in litigation conditions in Brazil,” the US State Department said in a statement.
