On the night of Gremio’s farewell home to the 2025 season, the arena was a scene of frustration. Against Fluminense, the team led by Mano Menezes lost 2-1 and practically bid farewell to the possibility of competing in the Libertadores, which depends on finishing eighth in the points championship.

The result sparked boos and impatience from fans, given that the most likely scenario points to the Copa Sudamericana, a destination that seems like a consolation given the initial expectations. The climate of irritation also reflected the balance of an irregular year.

“We have to plan the year well, our competitions, hire the right staff so that the coach has options,” full-back Marcos Rocha said as he left the field. “In short, the goal has been achieved, which is to get rid of the frustration of fighting for relegation as quickly as possible. But I am sad about the season.”

For him, the boos are not limited to the performance against Fluminense, but rather a year of ups and downs. In this context, he commented on the first decision that the new administration will take, in which Odorico Roman will assume his duties on the eighth of this month.

The player concluded: “It was not because of the match, but rather the summary of the (irregular) year. The coach must be chosen as soon as possible.”

Willian demands to bid farewell to the season with dignity

Among the players, attacking midfielder Willian stressed the importance of ending the season with dignity.

“It was a key match to win,” he said. “We faced an opponent who had been playing together for a long time. Now the last match remains against Sport, and the goal is clear: to finish the match with a win.”

Gremio ends its participation in the Brazilian League next Sunday (7), against the club at the bottom of the standings, Sport, in a duel that symbolizes the last opportunity to provide a positive reaction to the fans before the holidays and the rebuilding planned for the following year.
