The year 2025 was marked in Colombia’s history by the assassination of Miguel Uribe Turbay, senator and centrist presidential candidate. His death after 65 days of fighting at the Santa Fe Foundation shocked the country and recalled the darkest episodes of political violence.
On Saturday June 7, Uribe Turbay was attacked by a teenager while speaking about mental health and safety during a campaign rally in the Modelia district in the west of the city. He was shot three times, two in the head and one in the leg, rendering him instantly unconscious. His security team and assistants attempted to treat him before taking him to a local clinic. He was then referred to the Santa Fe Foundation for critical neurosurgical operations.

For the next two months, his condition was unstable. On June 16, he suffered an acute cerebral hemorrhage that required a second procedure. Although there were moments of mild hope, the neurological damage was profound.
Finally, Miguel Uribe Turbay died at 1:56 a.m. on August 11 from irreversible brain complications and multi-organ failure. His wife, María Claudia Tarazona, confirmed the news with an emotional message: “Rest in peace, love of my life. I will take care of our children.”
The country responded with pain, so the government and Congress declared days of mourning and thousands of citizens converged on the National Capitol to say goodbye. He was buried in Bogotá’s Central Cemetery next to the remains of his mother, journalist Diana Turbay, a victim of violence in 1991.
