Venezuelan opposition figure Maria Corina Machado, who lives underground in her country, confirmed that she will be in Oslo next week to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, news agencies reported on Saturday (06/12/2025).
“I called Ms. Machado this evening and confirmed that she will be in Oslo for the ceremony,” said Christian Berg Harpviken, director of the Nobel Institute.
He said in a message to Agence France-Presse: “Given the security situation, we cannot give more details about when and how this will take place.”
Questions about Machado’s participation in the Nobel Prize distribution ceremony
The possibility of the 58-year-old competitor participating in the Nobel Prize ceremony on December 10 was the subject of major questions. In November, Venezuela’s prosecutor told AFP that Machado would be considered a “fugitive” if she left the country to receive her award.
The opposition, with ideas similar to those of US President Donald Trump, won the Nobel Prize in October for its struggle for democratic transition in Venezuela.
Machado was barred from running in the 2024 presidential election, in which outgoing President Nicolas Maduro was declared the winner, despite opposition protests and the fact that the United States and much of the international community did not recognize the result.
