ONLY a mother is capable of understanding another. They have this gift of loving without measure, of healing the wounds of the soul with a hug and of always responding with an unconditional yes to a child’s call. For a thousand and one reasons, they should … be eternal and never depart, even though those of us who have faith know that they remain with us for eternity. We, the Macarenos, have the chance to love without limits the one who gave us life and also the one we seek every day in the cloakroom of her basilica. He returned there this week after 118 days during which the light was less clear and life was lifeless because of his absence. Seeing her again in this place from which she should never have left restored our calm and began to heal the wounds that tore our souls in that dark June dawn. The Virgin is already in her house, because a mother never ends leaving or abandoning her lineage.
I saw it in the eyes of these women of the Macarena who, on December 8, found themselves in theirs. What wisdom! They gave us all a lesson in humility and consistency during these four months of tribulation. And yes, they were also broken by the pain of her absence, but they knew that sooner or later, she would return to our lives and that she would also make it more beautiful, fresher and more universal than ever. The one they saw on Monday at the foot of the presbytery looked like one of those girls that they themselves were years ago and who continue to be reflected in their memory when they look in the mirror every Good Friday morning. They never lost their calm. They cried, of course, but they knew that in the end, hope always triumphed. This is why only they can talk to Macarena about you, because they know that the Virgin is just another neighbor in this neighborhood where they learned to love her thanks to their elders. I saw it on their faces and in that sigh that passed through our souls when at six in the morning they checked that he was back. Because only a mother knows what another mother suffers.
Macarena women have names in the hearts of their children. This week, I saw its truth in the emotion that three of them gave me. I heard it in the fact that “she never abandons those who believe in her and those who ask for her with faith” that Charo told me, in the advice of the Kings with whom she assured me that “you have to look at her to see in her eyes how she responds to everything you want to ask her”, or in Gertru’s cry of life when she shared the power of the Virgin: “You healed me. You made my body have nothing and neither does yours. “I will continue to love you all the days of my life”. They are not heroines, they are just mothers who know well how much love hurts. We are lucky to have them so close, because in them the purity of this neighborhood which made the Macarena universal is alive.
