At the invitation of Diamond Filmes, Rolling Stone Brasil previewed the film and tells you what you thought
How far would you go to become one of the greats? For Timothée Chalamet, this means drawing inspiration from great actors and actresses, like Daniel Day-Lewis, Marlon Brando and Viola Davis, or athletes Michael Jordan and Michael Phelps. Interestingly, his new character, Marty Mauserprotagonist of Marty Supremeis just as ambitious and thousands of times more chaotic.
In the film directed by Josh Safdie – the filmmaker’s first solo film after making a career thanks to his collaborations with his brother Ben Safdie -, Chalamet delivers the best performance of his career by moving naturally between comedy, drama and the absurdities that the film’s narrative, loosely based on the life of table tennis player Marty Reisman, shows on screen.
The plot follows a young man with many dreams who embarks on a wild journey from New York to Tokyo in his quest for greatness in table tennis. The first minutes effectively introduce the two protagonists, Marty And Rachel Mizler (played by the great Odessa Azionactress I love LA), and lead to an unexpected transition — without going into details so as not to spoil things, but you will understand what I am talking about when you watch the film.
With this fashion for biopics in Hollywood in recent years, Marty Supreme It breaks with this formula of excessive dramatization of the protagonist’s life and projection of flashbacks (usually in black and white) of childhood/adolescence/early adulthood. The story is told in a very gripping way and the duration of 2h30 goes unnoticed.
The supporting cast also supports the grandeur and madness of Marty Mauser. A’zion stands out like Rachel. Tyler Okonma (the name adopted by Tyler, the Creator in his acting career) shines like Wally in his cinema debut. Luc Manley have fun in the role of Dion Galanisthe rich friend who Marty used as a sponsor. Gwyneth Paltrow brings layers to Pierre Kayformer actress who lives in the shadow of her tycoon husband Milton Rockwell (Kevin O’Leary) – both end up entering the protagonist’s interest radar. Already Abel Ferrara impresses how strange and mysterious it is Ezra Mishkinan essential part of the story.
Of course, it is impossible not to mention the direction to take Josh Safdiewho commanded Uncut gemstones (2019) and Good driving (2017) with his brother previously. The filmmaker manages to balance the precision of table tennis with the chaotic energy of Timothée Chalametwhose character gets into difficulty while disappointing almost everyone around him.
Even with diverse characters and frenetic events, Marty Supreme manages to build a solid story that makes you laugh, tense and even move, especially in the final sequence. It is not only the story of a table tennis athlete from New York, but also a portrait of ambition and relationships – romantic, familial and friendly – treated in a deeply human way. In addition to highlighting Timothée Chalamet In the best case, the film also serves as a showcase for Tyler Okonma And Odessa Aziontwo promising talents presented with great impact.
Marty Supreme releases in Brazilian cinemas on January 22, with preview screenings starting on January 8.
