The work of Mauricio de Souza, creator of “Torma da Mónica”, has become an intangible cultural heritage of the city of São Paulo after a new law was passed by the city’s mayor, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), on Monday (first).
Released amid the cartoonist’s 90th birthday celebrations, the text still acknowledges the scope of Mauricio’s work, which extends beyond the world of comics. Today, its characters are found in film, television, live broadcast, theatre, games and a wide range of productions.
In addition to the new law, City Hall also announced a series of tributes to the cartoonist. Next year, 90 sculptures inspired by his characters will be deployed throughout the capital, São Paulo. A visit to MSP Estúdios, Mauricio’s headquarters, is planned for those who take photos with at least half of the pieces.
The Viaduto do Chá, in the historic centre, will have a bench in his honour. Details about the artists signing the sculptures or dates have not been announced. The city hall also promises other measures to accompany the celebration of nine decades.
