The estimated prize of 1 billion reais for the Mega Sena da Virada, whose draw takes place on the 31st, is higher than the budget of 95% of Brazilian cities. Treasury data shows that the gross revenues achieved in 2024 by 5,337 of the country’s 5,570 municipalities did not reach one billion, a figure that Mega da Virada would have to pay.
The information is contained in the DCA (Annual Account Statements) sent by the federative entities to the Ministry of Finance in 2025. Mandatory for town halls, the document must be submitted in the first half of each year with information on the immediately preceding financial year. The data is provided by the municipalities themselves and is not subject to modification by the Treasury.
The Mega da Virada price is equivalent, for example, to 48 times the revenue that Oliveira de Fátima, in the interior of Tocantins, reported collecting in 2024. The municipality has 1,220 inhabitants and last year recorded one of the lowest collections (R$20.7 million) in the country according to Treasury data.
The jackpot is also ten times the revenue of Piauí’s Canto do Buriti, which said it raked in 100 million reais last year. The city has 19.6 thousand inhabitants.
In large cities, the proportion decreases
With an estimated population of 172,000 people according to the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), the gross income of Lages (SC) in 2024 is closest to the amount to be paid by Mega da Virada among the municipalities that collected less than a billion reais that year.
The city of Santa Catarina reported a turnover of 999.9 million reais last year.
A single bet on Mega-Sena costs R$6 and can be placed up to 8 p.m. at lottery points, on the Loterias Online portal and on the Loterias Caixa application. The exception is digital prizes, which can be purchased until 8:30 p.m. exclusively through the Loterias Online portal and via the app.
