These and other famous phrases from the National Register are signed by Milton Viola Fernandez, the great Melor Fernandez (1923-2012), who occupies the top shelf of the press. The carioca that has made Ipanema its backyard, its path is told in the book “From Milton to Melor: The Path of an Ipanemeni, Pasquini and Uncensored Journalist” (Appris), by historian Andrea Quiroz, which will be launched on Saturday, at the Trem das Gerais café, in Villa Isabel, the northern district of Rio. This work is the result of ten years of research that reaches beyond the public figure, presenting everything from Mayer’s orphan boy to the intellectual who transformed humor into criticism and characterized alternative journalism.
“I believe that Mellor, along with other historians of his generation, was one of the great creators of the ‘Cultura do Carioquismo’, which presented Rio de Janeiro as a metaphor for Brazil, precisely at the time when the city was the federal capital,” says the author, who also explains in the book the journalist’s supposed invention: the mural (photo).
Mellor was a brilliant journalist, Andrea describes him. He learned the trade, starting as an assistant at the O Cruzeiro magazine, and thus became familiar with the entire production process.
Another great invention besides Ya Paskim also cannot be ignored, which is the so-called “Republic of Ipanema”. In his chronicles, he displayed an ideal Ipanema, making his home—the writer became a statue on the edge of the neighborhood—and leaving his legacy, often contrasted with the real Ipanema.
The author takes the opportunity to list three more great quotes from the teacher:
- “Free thinking is thinking.”
- “I’m a handcuffed carioca. I don’t see myself anywhere else but in Rio.”
- “We comedians are important enough to get arrested and no one gets released.”
The teacher said that we live in a country of contradictions – expressions made up of terms with opposite meanings, such as “the cry of silence.” I used to cite the example of Escola Superior de Guerra: being intended for “war”, it cannot be “superior”. This is the case of the Brazilian Institute of Responsible Gaming (IBJR), which is lobbying against the project that increases taxes on gambling. Being a “toy”, it cannot be “responsible”. With all due respect.
