Mercadona staff will have one additional week of vacation per year. The Valencian company announced this Friday that its management committee had agreed to extend the vacation period by an additional week, up to a total of 37 days per year, compared to 30 days until now. These days will be applicable to the company’s more than 110,000 workers.
This measure, as the company explains in a press release, will come into force in 2026 in the two countries where it operates, Spain and Portugal. It also indicates that it will be consolidated for the rest of the years.
Furthermore, the company chaired by Juan Roig indicates that the Management Committee has also decided, for the second year in a row, to distribute an extraordinary bonus next March.
This amounts to a total of €280 million and, once distributed, corresponds to a monthly payment for each member of staff. Mercadona explains that this remuneration will be added to the variable remuneration, of one or two monthly payments depending on the seniority of each worker.
“With this decision, Mercadona also recognizes the individual and collective effort of its extraordinary team, a fundamental pillar to obtain year after year magnificent results in terms of productivity, efficiency and management, keys to achieving the goals and objectives set, after having increased the salaries of 100% of the workforce by 8.5% in 2025”, we explain in the aforementioned press release.
The supermarket company specifies that these measures represent “an investment effort of 380 million euros” and that with them “it demonstrates” its “pioneering character in worker satisfaction”.
