Merz calls on the Palestinian Authority for “necessary reforms” – DW – 06/12/2025

Today, Saturday (06/12/2025), German Chancellor Friedrich Merz urged Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to make changes so that he can play a constructive role in the post-war regime in Gaza, before his meeting on Sunday with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on his first visit to Israel.

The Foreign Ministry said in a brief statement that Merz spoke on Saturday with Abbas in an “extensive” call that took place in a “friendly atmosphere.”

The text stated, “The advisor affirmed his support for the peace plan presented by US President Donald Trump and welcomed the cooperative position of the Palestinian Authority in this regard. The Palestinian Authority must now urgently implement the necessary reforms.”

“If he succeeds, he can play a constructive role in the post-war order,” the memo continued.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that the ultimate goal must be a two-state solution, a Palestinian state and an Israeli state, because it is this perspective that provides the greatest possibilities for achieving “lasting peace and security” for both peoples.

On Saturday, Merz will travel to Jordan and from there to Israel, where he is scheduled to meet Netanyahu.

He will be the first German chancellor and the first leader of a European power to travel to the country since the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant against Netanyahu for his possible involvement in war crimes in Gaza.
