BRUSSELS, December 11 (EUROPA PRESS) –
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stressed on Thursday that there would be meetings on Ukraine this weekend with the participation of a US delegation, with the idea that contacts would continue in Berlin next week to discuss issues such as territorial transfers in Ukraine.
“We suggested that we, together with the US administration, finalize discussions on the documents,” Merz explained about contacts with US President Donald Trump, during the call also attended by French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Merz said the latest document discussed and sent to Washington addresses “territorial concessions that Ukraine could accept.” “This is a question that the Ukrainian president must answer,” he declared during the press conference held with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, visiting Germany this Thursday.
In this sense, the German Chancellor indicated that there would be discussions with the American administration this weekend “and that there could be a meeting at the beginning of next week” in the German capital to continue this debate.
“Whether or not the US administration will participate in this meeting depends largely on the documents we will be working on at that time,” he said, while remaining optimistic about working with Trump on this “road map”.
He declared that during his telephone interview with Trump, he had had “the clear impression” that the North American president was open to collaboration with European partners. “He knows that Europeans want and must be listened to in their own interests,” he said.
