
River Plate and Atlético de Madrid will meet this Sunday at Inter Miami’s Chase Stadium in the final of the first edition of the Messi Cup. the U16 tournament organized by the production company Lionel Messi.
The meeting is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. (Argentine time) and will be broadcast live on ESPN 2, a channel that can be tuned online to Flow, DGO and Telecentro Play; and on the digital platform Disney+ Premium.
El Millonario advanced to the final with second place in Group B, where they drew 2-2 with Barcelona, lost 2-1 to Manchester City and beat Inter 5-1. They got four points like the Blaugrana, but achieved a better goal difference (+3 against +1) and finished in the top four. In the semi-finals, Chelsea were defeated 3-1 and won Valentín Sayago, Ramiro Alvarez and Bruno Cabral.
El Colchonero, for its part, started the competition with a 4-2 defeat against the Blues and bounced back with a 1-0 win over Inter Miami. They tied Newell 2-2 on the final day and reached the semifinals in second place with four points. At the crossroads they beat Manchester City 3-2.
The production company founded by Lionel Messi is hosting the Messi Cup, an under-16 youth tournament that will take place in Miami and will feature some of the most prestigious clubs in the world and their best players under the age of 16. As he explained, it is an event that is “innovative” and combines elite competition on the field with cultural and sports events off the field.
The competition was created to set a new global standard in youth football. “It is more than a tournament, it is a series of live events and a platform with digital essence that combines sport, culture and innovation. Its mission is to create long-term value for athletes as they develop their careers, for communities united by the passion for sport and for brands seeking authentic and lasting connections in the new era of football,” the organization explained.
Eight clubs took part in the tournament. In addition to River and Atlético Madrid, Inter Miami, Barcelona, Manchester City, Inter Milan, Chelsea and Newell’s played. Over six days, these teams played a total of 18 games at some of Miami’s most iconic venues, including Inter Miami’s Chase Stadium.
Finally, Tim Pastore, CEO of 525 Rosario, the production company founded by Leo Messi, referred to the tournament and said: “It is the meeting point between the football of today and the players of tomorrow.
