Lionel Messi’s visit to a stadium in Calcutta, India, ended in scandal: the star left the stadium earlier than planned, there were riots in the stands and spectators denounced fraud by the organization of the event.
The national team captain walked around the field, greeted the crowd, and then left the stadium even though he was scheduled to play for a few more minutes.
Messi traveled to the Asian giant until Monday and was greeted in style upon his arrival at the West Bengal stadium by enthusiastic fans who chanted his name as part of the so-called GOAT Tour, in which he arrived alongside Rodrigo De Paul and Luis Suárez.
Authoritarians don’t like that
The practice of professional and critical journalism is a mainstay of democracy. That is why it bothers those who believe that they are the owners of the truth.
But hours later at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata, thousands of fans wearing the player’s jerseys felt betrayed because the event was so short and incidents broke out.
The world champion ran across the pitch, waved to the crowd and then immediately left the stadium. At this point, anger erupted from some fans, many of whom had paid more than $100, and the situation escalated into incidents where seats were torn down and water bottles were thrown from the stands, while some raided the field.
West Bengal authorities confirmed the arrest of the main organizer after receiving a formal complaint and also demanded a written promise to refund the money for the tickets sold.
