Former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro arrived this Tuesday morning at the Federal Police Superintendency in Brasilia to visit former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is expected to undergo surgery in the coming days. Michelle is allowed to visit her husband on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The surgical intervention has already been authorized by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), but the defense has not yet communicated a date.
Doctors detailed, in a note published this Sunday, the surgical intervention that the politician will undergo to correct a bilateral inguinal herniaafter clinical and imaging tests confirm the problem. According to the text signed by surgeon general Claudio Birolini and cardiologist Leandro Echenique, Bolsonaro must be hospitalized to carry out the procedure.
The former president has been incarcerated since November 22 at the Regional Superintendence of the Federal Police of the Federal District, where he is serving the sentence of 27 years and three months in prison imposed on him by the STF for attempted coup d’état.
According to doctors, tests showed that part of the intestine protruded beyond the abdominal wall during the so-called Valsalva maneuver, which increases internal pressure in the abdomen.
What is a bilateral inguinal herniorrhaphy?
“Given the clinical and imaging findings, he will undergo surgical treatment called bilateral inguinal herniorrhaphy,” the note explains.
In addition to surgery, doctors scheduled a procedure called anesthetic phrenic nerve block, which is responsible for the movement of the diaphragm. The measure aims to control persistent hiccups, which have not responded to drug treatment.
“Given the presence of persistent hiccups that are refractory to established drug treatment, it is planned, during the period of hospitalization, to carry out an anesthetic blockade of the phrenic nerve, with the aim of alleviating hiccup attacks,” they inform.
The memo does not specify the exact date of the operation or the expected length of stay, but it does say that Bolsonaro will be hospitalized for both procedures.
The operation was authorized by Minister Alexandre de Moraes last Friday, after an investigation by the Federal Police revealed the need for medical intervention.
The PF’s expertise concluded that Bolsonaro should be operated on “as soon as possible”, but stressed that the intervention should be carried out “on an elective basis”. Moraes therefore considered that there was no urgency and ordered the lawyers to come up with a date.
Experts concluded that the former president suffered damage to a nerve in his torso resulting from surgery, which causes frequent hiccups. It is necessary to repair this injured area to stop the hiccups.
What is an inguinal hernia?
An inguinal hernia occurs when part of the intestine or abdominal tissue protrudes through a weak spot or opening in the muscular wall of the groin, forming a bulge.
