Microsoft publicly confirmed that Teams had a performance issue; an update expected in January 2026 will move calling functionality to a separate process
Criticisms of the performance of the company’s communications platform Microsoft are almost as old as software. In particular, high memory consumption is a recurring source of frustration on systems with limited resources. Today, the company appears to be tackling the problem at the root.
According to a report from Windows Latest, Microsoft has confirmed that the Windows app Teams unnecessarily consumes a large amount of resources, even when idle, and is testing a technical restructuring that should significantly reduce RAM usage.
Microsoft confirms performance issue
In the administrative center Microsoft 365The company said, according to the latest Windows report, that Teams was experiencing performance issues, especially during calls.
- The software consumes up to 1 GB of RAM when idle; during calls, memory usage increases even more;
- Additionally, the app takes an unusually long time to be ready for use after launch. This is largely because Teams needs to load all teams, discussionscalendars, files, and connections to Microsoft services on startup.
To resolve these issues, Microsoft test an update which will be rolled out to all users from January 2026. The essence of the strategy: moving the calling system into a separate process.
