The new Minister of Education, Milagros Tolón (Toledo, 57 years old), is a leader of the PSOE whose political career has always been linked to Pedro Sánchez. Sanchist of pure race, he was characterized in his trayectoria by his loyalty to the president of the government and secretary general of the PSOE in Castile-La Mancha, the territory controlled by the main critic of Pedro Sánchez, Emiliano García-Page. The baron announced in the press the election of Tolón as Government delegate in his autonomous community in December 2023 and, according to sources from his entourage, this happened again this month, following Sánchez’s institutional declaration on the scale of the Palace of La Moncloa.
A graduate in Geography and History from the Complutense University of Madrid and a graduate in Teaching from the University of Castilla-La Mancha, Tolón was mayor of Toledo between 2015 and 2023. Like so many other PSOE governors, she won the last municipal elections, but the sum of the PP and Vox took over from I command.
Considered the organic enemy of García-Page, Tolón entered the federal leadership of the PSOE during the overhaul of the 41st Congress held a year ago in Seville. His role is that of responsible for social policies, mayors and social movements at the socialist summit, where his presence does not respond to the quota of a federation like that of Castilla-La Mancha — the only one where the socialists govern by absolute majority — but to his loyalty and his agreement with Sánchez. The president was appointed from his professional department, he also holds a teaching diploma from the Autonomous University and was a professor at the Escuela de Adultos de Toledo. But above all, he said during his appearance today that “he has gained knowledge and experience at every level of government in our country.”
Tolón was the first female mayor in the history of the city of Toledo, she was also a member of the Cortes de Castilla-La Mancha and was at the state level at the head of the government delegation. According to Sánchez, “this is a fundamental skill in an area in which all administrations in our country have skills such as educational policy, and where the capacity for dialogue is essential.” The reading of the federation led by García-Page is very different: “Sánchez bunkerizado does more sanchism”.
García-Page is the most experienced general secretary of the PSOE. He has been at the head of his federation since 2014. That day, the appointment of Isabel Rodríguez as government spokesperson in 2021 as executive spokesperson and Minister of Territorial Policy (he has been appointed since last year) was interpreted as an attempt by Sánchez to take a position thinking about the succession in Castile-La Mancha. The Tolón district of this socialist federation is marked by rivalry with the autonomous president.
