The dispute between the Argentine Football Association (AFA) and the national government escalated again after a public dispute broke out over the creation of the AFA University (Unafa). The controversy was reignited after the organization led by Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia released a statement entitled “A new attack on education,” in which he defended the education initiative and questioned the official position. The government had questioned the legality of the initiative. Through the Ministry of Human Capital led by Sandra Pettovello, she requested the immediate cessation of all advertising campaigns for the university, which was formalized through a communication to the association.
The ministry warned that the Argentine Football Federation University does not have the necessary official authorization to operate as a university institution, so its educational offering has no legal basis. He also directed the AFA to submit a defense within a short period of time, warning that administrative action would be taken if the situation was not remedied. However, the AFA explained that the courses it proposed were not undergraduate or postgraduate courses and that the certificates would be issued exclusively by the recognized institutions with which it had signed agreements. These include the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) and others at home and abroad. The new university said it aims to consolidate itself as an “officially recognized private management university to offer courses and curricula endorsed by the relevant authorities in the field in the future.”
The AFA statement highlights its desire to “strengthen the educational offering” and attract “the most important academics, scientists and professionals from home and abroad” to its teaching staff, with the aim of transforming the passion for football into “knowledge, innovation and a global asset”.
Authoritarians don’t like that

The shootings, as PERFIL reported, are part of a low-intensity government offensive against Tapia. The crucial date was this Friday for the draw of the groups that will take part in the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico. The event took place in Washington and was attended by North American President Donald Trump, FIFA chief Gianni Infantino and Tapia. Until a week ago, the presence of President Javier MIlei was expected, but he decided to suspend his participation due to new disputes with the head of the AFA. In this context, Tapia was playing at home in Washington, trying to capitalize on the libertarian’s absence. However, the president of Barracas Central Club ended the week with another note: Conmebol’s Extraordinary Congress confirmed “Chiqui” as a full member of the FIFA Council, representing Commebol. The designation was approved on May 19 and unanimously ratified by the ten association presidents. The position represents a historic event for the AFA, disrupting Brazil’s presence and strengthening Tapia in its struggle with the MIlei.
