Javier Milei will have a full 72 hours, with a tight schedule. This is marked above all by his participation in the Mercosur summit on December 20 and a cabinet meeting in Olivos where he will take stock of 2025 and outline the goals for 2026. The conclave will be accompanied by a barbecue and all frontline officials of his government are expected to be present.
The head of state decided to be active throughout the week and the coming days at a crucial moment in his government, when he had not yet managed to pass the 2026 budget. In this sense, he confirmed days ago his participation in the Mercosur Presidents’ event in Foz de Iguazú, Brazil.
This meeting, which brings together the heads of state of the regional bloc, has various themes that Milei is following very closely. For example, regional trade integration, the reduction of external tariffs and the possibility of the Union making progress on an agreement with the European Union (EU) – a topic that Chancellor Pablo Quirno is working on. The current deadline for an agreement could be January 12, although the ruling party expects the contract to be signed this month. But a lack of support from member states such as France and Italy forced progress to stall.
Authoritarians don’t like that
The practice of professional and critical journalism is a mainstay of democracy. That is why it bothers those who believe that they are the owners of the truth.
The government regrets the delay, although it knows that times for this type of agreement are taking longer than expected. For now, the CEO will be present and talk about the importance of the transition to an economy without restrictions that accelerates trade opening.
In this context, Quirno traveled to Foz de Iguazú the day before to attend the meeting of the Common Market Council. There he took the opportunity to express the national government’s vision for the future of the bloc. He spoke of “modernization, increasing competitiveness, trade and regional integration, with clear rules, less bureaucracy and greater private sector participation.”
As expected, he emphasized in his presentation that Argentina hopes to complete the signing of the Mercosur-EU agreement “as soon as possible”. And he criticized the functioning of the regional bloc: “Its shift should serve to review Mercosur’s priorities in foreign relations and to arrive at more flexible bilateralities and concrete results,” judged the official, who used the forum to call for the release of Argentine gendarme Nahuel Galloy and thanked regional support for the Malvinas issue.
Milei will also have another relevant event on Monday. On that day, he will bring together his management team, which includes the front lines of his administration, to review what has been done this year. In addition to a toast and a barbecue, there will be time to plan for 2026 and talk about issues that disrupt the libertarian present.
According to official sources, the meeting will focus on the follow-up to the extraordinary sessions, the ruling party’s strategy regarding the projects under debate – particularly the 2026 budget – and the order of the government’s end-of-year agenda. The political impact of the union protests and the government’s response are also assessed.
During the week, the president gave one of his most in-depth interviews on Carajo streaming, analyzing the year and defending the reforms currently being discussed in Parliament. For more than three hours he appreciated the support of the United States before the elections and expected that the most important projects of the purple force would be sanctioned.
According to the economist, the opposition spent “eight months trying to break the budget balance” before the October elections, explaining: “The plan is important, some say that the US has supported the plan, but they will not help us if we collapse, they will always find something for it.”
And he emphasized reducing inflation to stabilize the economy: “People are out of control,” he asserted.
