A group of soldiers announced this Sunday (July 12, 2025) on public television the “removal” of President Patrice Talon, who wanted to hand over power in Benin in April 2026 after ten years in office.
“At our meeting on Sunday, December 7, 2025, we discussed and decided the following: Mr. Patrice Talon is relieved of his duties as President of the Republic,” the self-proclaimed Military Committee for the New Creation (CMR) announced.
However, the government assured that forces loyal to the president were working to thwart the coup attempt and regain control of the country.
