
A military transport aircraft An Antonov An-22 crashed on Tuesday in the Russian region of Ivanovo, about 250 kilometers from Moscow. The aircraft, the last example of the An-22 model in service, had been in service for more than 50 years and was undergoing test maneuvers after repair. According to local Russian media, It is likely that it fell due to technical failures.
Russian authorities have already opened an investigation into the accident, without ever suggesting that the incident was linked to the war in Ukraine.
The An-22 is the world’s largest Soviet turboprop aircraft, designed for long-distance transportation of weapons, military equipment and troops. In 2024, the Russian Aerospace Forces announced that the model would be decommissioned.
