After the controversy surrounding the restaurant located in the annex of Block G, which served meals with insects, pieces of plastic and even a metal nut, the Ministry of Health declared that the situation constituted a “physical and biological danger”. The assessment took place after serious failings in hygiene and food handling were discovered at Nana Café.
According to the ministry, so-called physical hazards were identified during inspection by the presence of foreign bodies in food, such as insects, plastic fragments and metal objects. Biological hazards are linked to the risk of contamination by micro-organisms capable of causing food-borne illnesses.
Still according to the filing, servers have reported cases of food poisoning after consuming meals on site. This illness is caused by eating contaminated food and can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and feeling unwell.
Food poisoning occurs when a person eats food contaminated with bacteria, viruses or toxins. Some of the most common agents in this type of situation include Salmonella, Escherichia coli (E. coli), Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus cereus.
The affair was revealed after Metropolises have access to a document in which the department notifies the DMI Comércio de Alimentos e Bebidas LTDA, responsible for the establishment, of irregularities considered serious during the health inspection. These failures led to the suspension of the contract of the restaurant which operated in the Block G annex.
“Samples of the food served were collected and immediately sent for laboratory analysis. With the results of the report, expected next week, new measures will be adopted in accordance with the contract. The company that has been operating the restaurant since December 1 was hired through public tender, meeting all the criteria and requirements of the notice,” the note said.
