The Minister of the Supreme Federal Court, Alexandre de Moraes, on Tuesday ordered the release of the president of the Legislative Assembly of Rio de Janeiro, Rodrigo Bacellar (União Brasil), with the use of an electronic ankle bracelet. The measure is in accordance with the decision of Alerj, who, by a majority of 42 votes, yesterday revoked the preventive detention of Barcellar, suspected of having tried to obstruct a Federal Police operation.
“Taking into account the above, taking into account the decision of the Legislative Assembly of Rio de Janeiro, I GRANT PROVISIONAL FREEDOM to RODRIGO DA SILVA BACELLAR, through the CUMULATIVE IMPOSITION OF THE FOLLOWING PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES,” wrote Moraes, listing the restrictions of remaining removed from his position as president of the Legislative Chamber, while the investigation lasts criminal; night collection at home; ban on communicating with other persons under investigation; and the delivery of all passports to the PF.
Bacellar has been detained in a special cell of the PF Superintendence in Rio since last Wednesday. He is suspected of leaking data on an investigation targeting state deputy Tiego Raimundo dos Santos Silva, known as TH Jóias. The president of Alerj, according to the PF report, warned his parliamentary colleague of the arrest, with instructions to get rid of evidence, such as deleting cell phone data.
TH Jóias faces charges of drug trafficking, corruption, money laundering and gang formation, in addition to being suspected of mediating arms negotiations with the Comando Vermelho (CV).
In today’s decision, Moraes considered the evidence presented by the PF as “very serious”, indicating that it “actively acted to obstruct investigations involving a criminal faction and actions against organized crime, including with influence on the executive power of the State, likely to increase the risk of criminal continuity and undue interference in investigations into criminal organizations.”
