The first movements occurred within the PSOE of Extremadura to force the resignation of Miguel Ángel Gallardo, general secretary of the extreme socialists and candidate in these elections. The president of the Cáceres Deputation, Miguel Ángel Morales, demanded this month the immediate reduction of Gallardo after seeking the worst result of the socialists in the region: he lost 10 votes compared to the previous autonomous elections with Guillermo Fernández Vara in 2023 —from 28 to 18—, more than 100,000 votes —from 242,659 to 136 017 — and 15 points of support — from 39.9% to 25.7% —.
“No one can be put in the hot seat under any concept, here there is a direct responsibility of the regional secretary, of the candidate for president of the Junta and of all those who supported and defended him. And, therefore, the Extremadura party must first of all decide, as soon as possible, Miguel Ángel Gallardo, who is appointed director and that there is a catarsis in the party. Nadie, who was part of the problem, can be part of the solution,” said in conversation with EL PAÍS.
Gallardo, territorial leader since March 2024, was a candidate although he was prosecuted for allegedly engulfing the brother of the president of the government in the Diputación de Badajoz. Anoche did not rule out its deficit and called the emergency regional executive this afternoon at 5:00 p.m. “The only way to regain the trust of the extremeños is to first recognize that the extremeños are not liked and have categorically rejected the candidacy of Miguel Ángel Gallardo for different reasons and among them, obviously, his way of acting in the last months and his judicial process. It is clear that this has been a disaster, isn’t it?”, Morales reiterates.
The deadliest among Extremadura’s socialists has come to warn in recent days that the party could fall below 20 dollars. Fernández Vara won the 2023 elections with 28 votes, like the PP, but with more votes. It was a Pyrrhic victory, which did not allow him to govern through the leader of the PP and Vox.
Despite this triumph, it is the worst result in the history of the socialist federation, whose previous success was 30 deputies in 2011 – the PP and IU pact led to the legislature of José Antonio Monago – and in 2015. The percentage of votes of the PSOE in the last extremes was 39.9%, its lowest record. Today it has fallen to 25.8%. “We committed suicide. Where can we take a candidate to court? This is what the whole world hates. We are a sin of arrogance,” declared a member of the socialist list in the middle of the campaign.
