The President of the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), echoed President Lula this Friday (19/12), asking the Central Bank (BC) to reduce the interest rate in 2026, one of the main flags defended by the PT deputy.
The speech took place during a breakfast with journalists at the official residence of the House. At the meeting, Motta was asked about tax issues and highlighted the need for BC President Gabriel Galípolo to reduce interest rates.

“We still have a scenario of high interest rates, we have inflation under control, we have a booming economy, we have a record generation of jobs, it is the lowest unemployment in history. So, in my opinion, it is positive. The main mission that the government has, in my opinion, for the next year is to try, with the economic team and the Central Bank, to all work so that Brazil can enter a scenario in which these interest rates can go down”, Motta said.
The Speaker of the House also echoed Lula in saying that high interest rates in Brazil constitute one of the “obstacles” to the country’s growth. The day before, Lula, also at the café with journalists, had asked for a reduction in the Selic tariff for 2026.

“I have to recognize that interest rates, as they are, are an obstacle to the development or growth of the country. You block many investments with high interest rates, as they are. So it is important that we can work on reducing interest rates and, in a way, do our homework on issues that can help in this sense,” Motta said.
Lula and Motta united
The President of the House, like Lula, will have to be re-elected in 2026. Although Motta says that, for now, he will remain neutral due to his position as Speaker of the House, his allies admit that he will be on the same platform as the PT deputy.
In recent days, Lula gave a nod to Motta by appointing Gustavo Damião as the new Minister of Tourism. Gustavo is an ally of the current Speaker of the House. The two know each other from Paraíba, the political stronghold of the deputy and the new minister.
