
The National Court put released on bail to the Ceuta MP Mohamed Ali Duas, from the Movement for Dignity and Citizenship (MDyC) party. He had been in prison since early February after being arrested as part of Operation Hades, during which a drug tunnel was detected between Ceuta and Morocco.
The local politician, also responsible for penitentiary institutions, was released on bail of 20,000 euros and is suspended as a civil servant awaiting trial, according to the newspaper Ceuta lighthouse and judicial sources have confirmed it.
The Autonomous City has not yet ruled on this matter, since Ali Duas continues to maintain the status of deputy in the Ceuta Assembly as a member of the MDyC. The Rules of Procedure of the Assembly indicate that the file cannot be removed until there was a final sentencing decision from the court, he could therefore only leave the chamber by express resignation, which has not yet happened since his arrest.
At least two years of activity
Last November, the Criminal Chamber of the National Court rejected the MP’s appeal and agreed to keep him in preventive detention, while his brother was released released on bail in October after submitting a series of health reports. Both are considered to have contributed financially and logistically to drug traffickers.
The tunnel was discovered on February 19 during Operation Hades, which resulted in three civil guards arrestedthe deputy of Ceuta Mohamed Ali Duas, his brother and a nephew, for whom, after his arrest, an avoidable prison sentence was imposed with a bail of 6,000 euros.
The infrastructure, located next to the Moroccan border, was located by the underground unit of the Civil Guard and it, located in a former marble factory closed for at least two years, was sealed on February 24. Its owner is still missing.
Researchers estimate that the tunnel operated for at least more than two years, particularly in the wake of the pandemic. The cavity was located during the third phase of the operation, resulting from a complaint from the Anti-Drug Prosecutor’s Office and led by Judge María Tardón and which already has 16 arrests.
