Students from the São Paulo municipal network who participated in the Guri music education program achieved 13% higher results in mathematics compared to students who did not participate in the proposal. This is one of the results of a study carried out by the Observatório Fundação Itaú in partnership with the State Government and Santa Marcelina Cultura, with technical support from the consultancy firm Oppen Social.
The survey data will be presented this Wednesday (10) during an event that closes the celebrations of the 30th anniversary of the Guri Project, at the São Pedro Theater, in the capital. The idea of the study is to assess the impact of the cultural sector on education.
Linked to the state cultural department, Guri provides musical training to children and adolescents, especially those from socially vulnerable regions, in more than 300 cities in São Paulo. The initiative has been administered by Santa Marcelina (social organization) since 2008.
In the case where an improvement in mathematics performance was identified, existing data was analyzed, such as the Prova São Paulo, of 233 students who participated in Guri for three consecutive years, between 2018 and 2024, in project centers that exist in the capital of São Paulo.
Their information was compared to that of 2,671 students from the municipal network who did not participate in the initiative.
The study also analyzed the comprehensive development of students with 656 Guri students and the same number of similar students, but not part of the program.
Students in the initiative reported improvements in creativity (12%), scientific skills (16% among girls), emotional control (16% among boys) and also a perception of general improvement in mathematics (16%).
