Saved from dismissal, MP Glauber Braga claims that his victory represents a defeat for the President of the House, Hugo Motta, and his predecessor, Arthur Lira.
He claims the vote to impeach him was part of a “coup,” which would include reducing Jair Bolsonaro’s sentence and maintaining his son Eduardo’s political rights.
Suspended for six months, the psoloist promises to continue his crusade against the secret budget and the frenzy of amendments.
He warns that he will participate in the event called by social movements and left-wing parties for next Sunday, with the motto “Congress, enemy of the people.”
Glauber spoke to the Chronicle this Thursday morning, hours after escaping impeachment. Read the main excerpts from the interview:
Mister The day started with a suspension and ended simply suspended…
It was a turnaround, wasn’t it? It was a hair’s breadth away.
To what do you attribute the result?
There was a set of factors: public denunciation of what was happening, mobilization on the networks and internal coordination in the Chamber.
They scheduled the vote from Tuesday to Wednesday so that I wouldn’t have time to mobilize anything. But press censorship (banned from access to plenary on Wednesday) and the way they ousted me from the presidential chair increased the repercussions of the affair.
The deputies knew that yesterday’s session was followed, which makes all the difference. Furthermore, according to the general interpretation, the consequences of the vote would extend well beyond my mandate.
Many Centrão deputies seemed ready to impeach him, but simply chose to suspend his mandate. For what?
It is necessary to analyze previous votes. They carried out tests in plenary. Despite their majority, they did not reach 257 votes (necessary to revoke the mandate). They understood that they could end up with nothing: without suspension and without revocation. It was about harm reduction.
M. blamed then-Speaker of the House Arthur Lira for initiating impeachment proceedings. Did he work until the end to remove him?
He tried hard and was defeated. This shows that he can’t do everything. This defeat also belongs to Hugo Motta. Both men tried to use traditional methods of coercion, but they failed to understand that they were dealing with different people than they were accustomed to.
They prepared a coup d’état including my impeachment, the reduction of Jair Bolsonaro’s sentence and the maintenance of Eduardo Bolsonaro’s political rights. My victory put a stop to the project they wanted to impose.
After suspending him for six months, the House rejected the indictment of MP Carla Zambelli, who was found guilty and is imprisoned in Italy. How do you evaluate the decision?
It was a mistake. She has already had her political rights withdrawn by the STF and no longer exercises her mandate because she is in prison. She and Eduardo Bolsonaro must be indicted for the crimes they committed.
I do not accept in any way that they create false symmetry between me and them. I was prosecuted because I defended my mother’s honor, fought the secret budget and confronted Arthur Lira.
During the vote, MP Zé Trovão, from the PL, accused Planalto of having threatened to remove the amendments to save him. Did this happen?
It was a fact, a lie. Everyone knows I wouldn’t support that at all. I would be the first to say no. One step away from marriage, I took a stand and maintained my position against the secret budget. When the far right and the PL felt they were going to be defeated, they started this conversation.
His mandate was suspended for the next six months. What do you plan to do?
I will continue to be a political activist. I will talk to people, hold meetings, participate in public events. I will be present at the events on the 14th. My mandate is suspended, but I remain firm.
Her seat will be occupied by former senator Heloísa Helena, first deputy of the PSOL-Rede coalition in Rio. Will she align with the government or the opposition?
I don’t know (laugh). Only Heloísa can answer this question. I wouldn’t dare speak for her…
