
Myanmar’s military junta leader Min Aung Hlaing said Sunday that the country’s elections were “free and fair”, despite the process being organized by the military itself which seized power in a coup five years ago.

— We guarantee that the elections will be free and fair — Min Aung Hlaing told reporters after voting in the capital, Naipidau. According to him, the election “will not see its reputation tarnished by the fact that it is conducted by the army.”
This statement contrasts with recurring criticism from the international community, which questions the legitimacy and transparency of the electoral process under military rule.
