The qualification process will consist of one free digital theoretical course and only two compulsory practical courses.
Starting January 5, 2026, applicants for the National Driving License (CNH) of Rio Grande do Sul will follow the new rules defined by Contran Resolution No. 1,020/2025, Provisional Measure No. 1,327/2025 and Law No. 15,153/2025. DetranRS, in partnership with Procergs, has established a working group to implement the changes without a transition period.
Among the main changes are the free and digital theoretical course, the reduction of the minimum number of practical courses to just two hours and the possibility of automatic renewal of the driving license for good drivers.
The toxicological test, which will again be required for the first license of car and motorcycle drivers, will only be charged after regulation by Contran. Until then, the practical driving test will follow the current model.
According to DetranRS, it is now possible to start the process in CFCs or through the Gov.br application, including biometric collection and scheduling of medical examinations.
