In a duel between teams with subpar Premier League campaigns, Newcastle beat Fulham 2-1 at St. James’ Park in the quarter-finals of the English League Cup. But the triumph of the current champions occurred in the struggle.
Yoane Wissa opened the scoring after ten minutes of play by taking advantage of a rebound from goalkeeper Bernd Leno, after a cross into the area. It was actually the striker’s first goal on his starting debut after returning from injury. The response from visitors, however, was not quick. Indeed, six minutes later, Sasa Lukic, with a header, left everything the same. Newcastle relied on more speed and put pressure on their opponents for the rest of the first half and the entire second half.
In one such finish, after the break, Bruno Guimarães looked for a through ball which ended in an own goal for Fulham, but it was disallowed for offside. With everything looking like it was heading to a penalty shootout, the penalty had an effect in stoppage time. And it was up to 19-year-old midfielder Lewis Miley to ensure the supporters celebrated after receiving an assist from Tonali and heading into Leno’s right corner to define the victory.
Newcastle and Fulham arrived for the duel betting heavily on the knockout tournament. While the Magpies are recovering from their defeat to Sunderland three days ago, the Cottagers failed to capitalize on their good momentum following their 3-2 victory over Burnley, also this weekend in the English Championship.
Newcastle therefore reach the semi-final of the English League Cup and await the draw to find out who their next opponent will be in the title race.
