BRUSSELS, December 11 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, defended this Thursday that “no one should interfere in the affairs of the European Union after the tenant of the White House, Donald Trump, declared that “weak” Europe was facing its own “destruction”, in accordance with the new national security strategy of the United States.
“No one is supposed to intervene, without a doubt,” said the head of the community bloc in an interview with the Brussels newspaper “Politico”, when asked about the American strategy, which claims that Europe faces an “erasure of civilization” in the years to come and which criticizes the control efforts of far-right parties.
In a lukewarm response to the US president’s strong statements, he said it was not up to them, when it comes to elections, to decide who will be the leader of a country, but up to the citizens. “It is the sovereignty of the voters and it must be protected,” he added.
Thus, the President of the Commission declared that the European Union was proposing a “Shield of Democracy” aimed at intensifying the fight against foreign interference through digital platforms, particularly in electoral processes.
On the other hand, he said he had always maintained good working relations with American presidents, while emphasizing that Europe should focus on itself rather than comparing itself to other countries.
