Lando Norris, Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri are in contention for the 2025 world title
Summary
Lando Norris, Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri battle it out for the 2025 Formula 1 title in the final race in Abu Dhabi, with Norris leading and depending only on himself to win the championship.
Formula 1 will enter the final chapter of the 2025 season this Sunday 7, in a race that promises to be exciting for drivers and motorsport fans. Lando Norris, Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri are in the running for the world title. The decision takes place at the Yas Marina circuit in the United Arab Emirates.
Currently, Norris leads the championship with 408 points, followed by Verstappen, with 396, and Piastri, with 392. Unlike last weekend, in Qatar, Abu Dhabi will not have a sprint, meaning the title will be defined in the “main” race.
This season’s regulations guarantee 25 points for first place, 18 for second, 15 (third), 12 (fourth), 10 (fifth), 8 (sixth), 6 (seventh), 4 (eighth), 2 (ninth) and 1 for tenth place. Pole position and fastest lap on Sunday do not guarantee points.
To win the title this Sunday, Norris depends only on himself. The calculation is simple: if he wins the race, comes second or even third, the British McLaren driver guarantees the championship regardless of the final position of Verstappen or Piastri.
The scenario for Verstappen to become champion, in turn, is not simple: the Dutch Red Bull driver, four-time champion, must win the decisive race, while Norris would only have to finish in fourth place.
For Piastri, Australian McLaren driver, the scenario is much more complicated. He has to win the race and hope Norris finishes sixth at most. (Check out the scenarios below)
Norris position (condition to be champion)
1st, 2nd or 3rd place: Champion regardless of the finish of Piastri and Verstappen;
4th place: Champion if Verstappen does not win the race.
5th place: Champion if Verstappen finishes in second place or lower, regardless of Piastri’s position.
Verstappen’s position (condition to be champion)
1st place: Champion if Norris finishes in 4th place, regardless of Piastri’s position;
2nd place: Champion if Norris finishes in 8th place or lower, and Piastri must be in 3rd place or lower;
3rd place: Champion if Norris finishes in 8th place or lower, and Piastri must be in 3rd place or lower;
Piastri position (condition to be champion)
1st place: Champion if Norris finishes in 6th place or lower, regardless of Verstappen’s position;
2nd place: Champion if Norris finishes 10th or lower and Verstappen must be 5th or lower.
