The administration of Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB) intends to define areas for skateboarding and rollerblading, as well as picnics, at the Ibirapuera marquee. The proposal, signed by the municipal secretary for Green and Environment, Rodrigo Ashiuchi, is expected to be analyzed by the Park Management Board.
Closed since 2019, the marquee is scheduled to reopen the week of January 25, 2026, in honor of the anniversary of the city of São Paulo.
The secretary’s initiative is to establish zones of 3,200 square meters exclusively for roller skating, 3,600 square meters for skateboarders and 1,500 square meters for a children’s zone, in which children’s bicycles equipped with 12-inch rims will be allowed to circulate.
The marquee is a total of 27,000 square meters. The area is also expected to host fairs and other events, and can be used by sports advisors registered with the park.
For its project to be viable, the management of Nunes will have to reach an agreement with Urbia, which took over the management of Ibirapuera, in October 2020. The concession is valid for 35 years.
Searched by Leafthe dealership said it would not comment on the matter.
“We will present the proposal to the park management board and we have already spoken with the skateboarding and rollerblading community. Now we need to reach a consensus for (the executive) to issue an executive order regulating the use of the marquee,” Ashiuchi said. “We are here to respect history and serve everyone harmoniously.”
The new proposal indicates a change in the position of municipal management. At the beginning of November, a previous text from the Verde e do Meio portfolio prohibited sports practices and picnics in space.
The secretary said the restrictions were part of a project developed by the technical area of the secretariat. “We try to adjust the regulations according to everyone’s interests. The mayor wants everyone to be there.”
The restoration work on the marquee, which began in March 2024, is expected to cost 87 million reais and was carried out by Urbia.
The space has been subject to closures since early 2019, due to the risks posed by the lack of maintenance of the structure. For a decade, the equipment has suffered from falling pieces of its panel, as shown in a report from Leaf in 2017.
Installed since 1954, the Ibirapuera marquee is a reinforced concrete roof supported by 120 columns.
The work of irregular geometric shape, designed by the architect Oscar Niemeyer (1907-2012), is classified as historical heritage and constitutes a link between the cultural facilities of the park, such as the MAM (Museum of Modern Art), the Oca and the Afro Brasil Museum.
