When using weight loss pens, some patients may suffer from episodes of diarrhea and, according to nutritionist Cibele Santos, nutrition plays a direct role in controlling symptoms and recovering the body. “It is important to adjust the diet to alleviate discomfort and ensure the person remains well nourished,” he says.

The first recommendation is simple: constant hydration. Cibele recommends prioritizing water, coconut water, caffeine-free teas, light broths, and even small amounts of sports drinks. “In more intense cases, homemade serum helps replace lost electrolytes,” he explains. Sugary drinks, carbonated drinks and coffee should be excluded as they can make diarrhea worse.
A study of patients who stopped treatment with Mounjaro showed that they tended to regain weight and had worsening cardiometabolic indices.

The first days, the nutritionist recommends opting for light and astringent foods. “The BRAT diet – bananas, white rice, applesauce and toast – is gentle on the digestive system and helps firm up stools,” he says. Peeled guava, boiled potatoes and carrots are used as reinforcement, while fried foods, fatty or very spicy foods should be avoided.
Another important strategy is to include probiotics. “Natural sugar-free yogurt with live cultures can help restore intestinal flora,” says Cibele. She also mentions kefir, provided that it is well tolerated by the patient.
As soon as the acute phase improves, the specialist recommends a gradual reintroduction of food. “Start with minced chicken, white fish, cooked vegetables, puree and hard-boiled egg. And always observe the body’s reaction,” he advises.

However, some elements deserve a temporary break. “If you have lactose intolerance, reduce milk and dairy products. It’s also important to avoid excess fiber, such as whole grains, wholemeal breads and leafy greens,” he says. The nutritionist also warns against sweeteners like sorbitol, xylitol and mannitol, which can have a laxative effect.
Cibele points out that eating small portions throughout the day helps avoid overloading the intestines. And remember that basic hygiene care, like washing your hands well and making sure food is cooked thoroughly, makes a difference in controlling symptoms.

Finally, the nutritionist emphasizes the importance of professional support. “Every person responds differently to Mounjaro or other weight loss pens. Adjusting your diet individually can make all the difference in recovery and well-being,” he says.
According to her, monitoring the frequency of diarrhea and informing the doctor of any worsening is essential for the safety and continuity of treatment.
