THE OpenAI throw a new artificial intelligence model designed to improve ChatGPT in programming, science, and a wide range of professional tasks, weeks after the Google, from Alphabet Inc.., after putting the startup on the defensive with the successful launch of Gemini 3.
The new model, GPT-5.2is faster and more efficient in information retrieval, writing and translation, the company said this Thursday (11). The software, available in three tiers, also aims to improve imitation of the human reasoning process to handle more complex and time-consuming tasks in areas such as mathematics and programming.
Once the undisputed leader in AI development, OpenAI now faces renewed competition from Google and of Anthropic, which have launched new models in recent weeks. Google’s Gemini 3, in particular, received praise for its reasoning and programming capabilities and quickly rose to the top of most-watched AI rankings, such as those of LMArena and the The last examination of humanity.
Earlier this month, THE Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI declared “high alert” in an internal statement, indicating that internal resources should be redirected to accelerate improvements to ChatGPT. The directive echoes Google’s widely publicized decision to issue a high alert shortly after ChatGPT launched three years ago.
With GPT-5.2, OpenAI seeks to attract more enterprise customers and increase revenue by committing to investing more than $1 trillion in infrastructure for AI development. To that end, the company said the model was designed to “unlock even more economic value for people,” including improving the creation of spreadsheets and presentations, as well as writing code.
GPT-5.2 begins becoming available to paid users this Thursday.
In August, OpenAI released a highly anticipated new model, GPT-5, which was met with mixed reviews, with some expressing doubt that it represents a revolutionary change from previous versions. In November, OpenAI released a newer version of the model, 5.1, but this update was quickly overshadowed by the more powerful Gemini 3.
In an interview with CNBC this Thursday, Altman said: “Gemini 3 had less impact on our measurements than perhaps we feared.” Altman also said he expects OpenAI to emerge from high alert mode by January “in a very strong position.”
“Verified adult erotic content”
OpenAI also claimed to have started implement software capable of predicting the age of users — a measure which aims to control the way in which ChatGPT interacts with minors under the age of 18.
In a meeting with journalists this Thursday, the CEO of OpenAI applications, Fiji Simo, stated that the company intends to introduce this feature before launching an “adult mode,” which Altman said could enable uses such as “verified adult erotic content.”
Simo said “adult mode” will launch in the first quarter of next year.
