OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, and an Australian data center operator, have entered into an agreement to build large-scale artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure worth approximately US$4.6 billion.

Brisbane-based NextDC announced on Friday that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with OpenAI to develop an AI campus and a “supercluster” of graphics processing units (GPUs).
The Australian company said in a statement that the two companies will cooperate in planning, developing and operating infrastructure in western Sydney. NextDC shares rose 4.1% in early afternoon trading after the announcement.
The Australian government has said the project, estimated to cost A$7 billion (US$4.6 billion), will create thousands of direct and indirect jobs during its construction.
According to officials, the facility will use long-term power purchase agreements from new renewable sources and modern resources that do not require potable water for cooling.
