Oscar Fernández He has become one of the names in Extremadura politics, after being named Vox’s candidate for Council President in the regional elections on December 21. After the break of its parliamentary group with the PP AUTHONES in 2024, the elections are presented as a key step to assess the position of the two parties in Extremadura.
Born in Cáceres 50 years ago, Fernández grew up between the provincial capital and Casas del Castañar, a small municipality of 600 inhabitants in the Jerte Valley that he often considers an essential part of “his roots”. Married and father of two teenagers, complaints the role of family as the “pillar of your life” personal and his political vision, a message that he considers aligned with the ideological postulates of his party.
On a professional level, it is Diploma in Nursing from the University of Extremadura and holds an Executive Master’s degree in Commercial Management and Marketing from the Institute of Business Directors of Madrid. Before devoting himself fully to politics, he developed his career as a regional director in a multinational pharmaceutical company and held various positions in companies related to food distribution and the hospitality sector.
Political career
His political career within Vox was gradually consolidated. East party president in Cáceres since 2019 and spokesperson for the party in the Assembly of Extremadura, a position he held after the 2023 regional elections. In these elections he led the list of the Cáceres constituency and contributed to Vox obtaining five seats and 8.1% of the vote, a result that allowed the party to condition the Popular Party government.
This central role marked his relationship with the regional president, María Guardiola, whom Fernández harshly criticizes. He defines it as the representative of a “continuist” PP and accuses his government of applying a policy “similar to the socialist one”. His speech revolves around the denunciation of the “bipartite PP-PSOE system”, to which he criticizes that Extremadura remains, in his words, “behind” in terms of development and infrastructure after more than four decades.
Among the main flags of his program are the defense of the Extremadura countryside against European environmental policies, the refusal of the closure of the Almaraz nuclear power plant, the reduction of political spending that he considers superfluous and a hard line against irregular immigration and what he calls “ideological laws”Vox presents these proposals as the basis for “real change” in the community.
With a combative profile and a direct tone, Fernández was firm in the face of a possible post-election scenario. He warned that will not summon the PP after the elections and will not “give a single vote”, although it does not exclude negotiating if the popular take the first step and accept the programmatic conditions of Vox, including the possibility of entering a future government.
A fan of historical novels, cinema and football, Fernández assures that His interest in politics was born while listening to the speeches of Santiago Abascalwith whom he says he shares the “same vision” of Spain and Extremadura. With this support and growing media visibility, he is facing his first campaign at the top of the list with the declared objective of “unblocking” the region and breaking the “political balance” which has marked the last decades.
