The musician preferred not to seek to resolve the aforementioned situation, for fear of compromising his unique ability to compose melodies.
Ozzy Osbourne He’s done almost everything and more in his life – and he’s always found it cheap. But one thing that the Prince of Darkness left cheap, to the point of becoming his greatest regret: having never learned to play any instrument.
In a 2017 interview with Rolling stone United Statesthe singer spoke about working on music using only his voice, from Black Sabbath to his solo career. According to him, it was a decision partly to preserve one of his great skills as a composer.
He explained:
“That’s one of my big regrets. I can play a little harmonica, but that’s it. However, I have a good ear for melody. I once spoke to a writer who said to me, ‘You can learn piano, but you’ll probably lose your natural instinct for melody.’ And I said, ‘That’s too big a risk for me.'”
Despite this conscious choice, Osbourne still felt like he was missing something by not learning an instrument. Especially in your relationships with other musicians and your songwriting credit.
He said:
“It’s interesting, because I can’t communicate musically with other musicians. I just like what’s in my head. Musicians tend to say, ‘I can transcribe whatever I want to compose.’ But then they incorporate it into their music, and then there’s the political side: ‘I composed this, you composed that.’ Sharon she gets angry and says, “Wait a minute. It’s Ozzy’s idea.”
Ozzy Osbourne, the king of melodies
On the other hand, a musician Ozzy Osbourne has worked with is defending his musical abilities. In a 2023 interview with Igor Miranda’s website, the guitarist Zakk Wylde praised the former boss’s ability to come up with melodies.
He said:
“In all my years with Oz, rarely what he sang on the album wasn’t the first thing he came up with. He kept tweaking it, didn’t like what he was singing and kept trying to find the melody. I kept playing it, he kept looking for it and I guarantee you the first thing out of his mouth was the right one. Everything in the songs “No more tears”, “Mom, I’m going home”, “The Miracle Man”, “Crazy Babies”…everything was excellent and it was always great.”
