Mayor Eduardo Paes ordered, this Sunday morning (7), the removal of the metal panels installed by CET-Rio along Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, in the South zone, installed between the lane towards Ipanema and the cycle path. The structures were part of the traffic pattern put in place for the inauguration of the Lagoa tree, celebrated on Saturday evening (6).

According to CET-Rio, the signs were positioned to organize traffic and prevent pedestrians from accessing areas with the highest traffic. The goal was to prevent drivers from excessively slowing down or even stopping to take photos, disrupting traffic and causing accidents as seen in other years of the attraction. The idea was that the fences would remain in place for the entire duration of operation of the Lagoa Christmas Tree, which runs from this Saturday until January 6.
The decision to remove the equipment was announced by the mayor in a post on X (formerly Twitter). Paes called the signs “horrible” and said they created a feeling of insecurity by blocking the view of the reflecting pool. “I have already ordered our Cet-Rio to remove these horrible signs that they have placed in the lagoon. They create insecurity in addition to preventing access to the beauty of Rio’s landscape. We will act with the municipal guard to avoid traffic jams,” he wrote.
The traditional Lagoa Christmas tree was lit this Saturday to the applause of locals and tourists. After a five-year hiatus, the traditional structure that marks Christmas in Rio de Janeiro has returned in style. During the inauguration, while the free tickets were sold, a fireworks display was also held on site.
