The rapporteur of the bill to reduce the sentences of putschists, MP Paulinho da Força (Solidariedade-SP), says the low number of people present at the event on Avenida Paulista shows that only left-wing activists are against the measure.
According to USP’s Public Debate Monitor, 13,700 people attended the demonstration. “All the videos that I published to defend the dosimetry project had a wider audience than that,” provokes the rapporteur, who has been the target of speeches and posters. “One of them, which I produced during the plenary session of the Chamber, was viewed more than 300,000 times,” he declares.
For the rapporteur, this shows that public opinion is in favor of reducing sentences, which should weigh on President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s decision to sanction or veto the project, if it is approved by the National Congress.
“I think Lula will look at the polls before making a decision. It is clear that the activists have one position, but the people have another,” he says.
He spoke last week with the project’s rapporteur in the Senate, Esperidião Amin (PP-SC), and said he hoped that the text approved in the Chamber would be maintained.
“Amin knows that changing will only delay the decision in favor of the incarcerated people, because the bill will return to the House and resume under the original terms,” he says.
